Julien's 2009 Summer Sale features genuine pieces of Hollywood history

Jim Hill preview some of the 700+ items that will coming up for bid later this month at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino

Go ahead. Admit it. You were somewhat depressed when Michael Jackson pulled the plug on that memorabilia auction that Julien’s Auctions had scheduled for earlier this year. You were hoping to bid on some of those one-of-a-kind items that Jackson had in his Disneyana collection. And once this event was canceled … Well, there went your chance to own a piece of Hollywood history.

Well, what if I were to tell you that Julien’s is about to stage another auction?  One that features perhaps the rarest / weirdest Disney collectible of all time? Which is a painting of Mickey Mouse that Michael Jackson himself painted?

Mind you, Julien's 2009 Summer Sale does feature a few Disney related items. Like this limited edition sericel which shows Baby Mickey riding on Dumbo’s back.

But to be honest, the over-700 items that will be up for bid in Julien’s next auction will have very little to do with The Walt Disney Company. This upcoming event is more of a celebration of Hollywood history. Which is why you’ll find genuine rarities here. Like an autographed picture of Stan Laurel from 1926.

“And what’s so rare about that?,” you ask. Well, Hal Roach didn’t actually team Stan up with Babe Hardy ‘til 1927. So this is a studio publicity shot that actually predates Mr. Laurel’s work with Mr. Hardy. Which makes this photograph rarer-than-rare.

You’ll find items with ties to some of Hollywood’s greatest comedians in Julien’s 2009 Summer Sale. Stuff like the Marx Brothers’ wardrobe tests for their 1939 picture, “At the Circus.”

Or – better yet – how about a set of Bob Hope’s old golf clubs?

What’s that you say? You’re not much of a comedy fan. Okay, then. How about something associated with the mega-musicals of the 1960s? Films like 1967’s “Doctor Dolittle ” …

… and 1969’s “Hello, Dolly!” …

The combined production costs of this two high profile projects nearly drove 20th Century Fox into bankruptcy back in the late 1960s. And thanks to Julien’s Auctions, you can now own a piece of concept art from one or both of these infamous motion pictures.

And speaking of infamous … How’d you like to own a prescription bottle that once belonged to Elvis Presley?

The items up for bid in Julien’s 2009 Summer Sale really do run the gamut from the ridiculous to the sublime. As for the ridiculous stuff, how about a personally autographed picture that Miss Piggy once sent to screen legend Ann Miller?

And as for the sublime … How about a transparency of Marilyn Monroe from the 1940s? Which was taken back before this screen siren actually became a star?

As for me … If I had my druthers (more importantly, the extra dough), I’d be bidding on those storyboards that David Negron drew for “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in the early 1980s. Which helped Steven Spielberg decide how to best stage the opening sequence of that Paramount Pictures' release.

If you also don’t have the coin to purchase any of these pieces of Hollywood history, not to worry. You can still scope out all of the items that are coming up for bid in Julien’s 2009 Summer Sale by dropping by the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Where these 700+ pieces will be on display from Saturday, June 13th through Thursday, June 25th.

As for the auction itself, that won’t actually get underway at Planet Hollywood ‘til Friday, June 26th at 10 a.m.
