I went to the midnight screening...

...and I'm thinking this has the potential to be bigger than I expected. I never realized the huge high-school age following of the first film, but there I was, probably in the the 5th highest percentile, age-wise. And when you're 23, and you can say that, that's pretty strange.

Lots of high school aged kids, and plenty more will follow over the weekend, I'm sure. Add into that the slightly older demographic...and then the parents with the younger kids (might I add...the flick's a pretty strong PG-13 at times, so maybe extremely cautious parents should check it out first...it's not horribly graphic, but many members of Davy Jones' crew could be potential nightmare fodder...and what they don't physically show they often aurally show...so yeah)...this has a lot of potential to be a big one for the House of Mouse.

I went to the midnight screening...

First, the new logo is fantastic. There were seven screens all packed at the theatre. I'm hoping for a huge opening, but with Trailers and everything, the run time is almost 3 hours. I don't know if it will play enough times to reach 100 million.

I can't wait to go and see the movie. I wanted to go to the midnight show but can't leave the kiddies home alone. Even thought the run time is around 3 hrs with previews there are so many showings here in FL that I think it can do well. I think they are starting showings earlier and later to accomodate the crowds. There are digital theaters here in FL and that is where i am going to see it. Why not see Jack Sparrow and Will Turner as clear as can be?

Saw the midnight opener. The film has heart. ;) Other than that, it is pretty much a transitional piece to set up the third film. A lot of the spoilers were calling for the evil chinese pirate. What happened to him?

Did I enjoy the film? Yes. Did I like film 1 even more? Absolutely. Film 3 had best knock some socks off as it wraps up the legend.

The acting (and action) are superb in # 2. Many good laughs along the way. So, yea, to speak truth, I did enjoy the second installment.

There has been talk of Bruckheimer wanting to helm a remake of the classic, 20,000 LEAGUES - a few points in this film already have me thinking he has done a lot of it.

1. Jack being chased on the beach by a horde of cannibals. Put in Kirk Douglas as Ned Land in that scene and you have a similar element to the 1954 classic.

2. Davy Jones plays one amazing pipe organ. So did Captain Nemo. Gotta admit, Davy's pipe organ is an amazing work of assembly and design, however....

3. The FLYING DUTCHMAN can dive and surface. And, with her long and pointy and jaggedy bowspit, it sure brings to mind the raker arch and the wheelhouse of the NAUTILUS breaching the surface from classic footage

4. The Kraken. Did I mention this film has a Kraken? Tentacle fight sequence that is un-freaking believable! And a mouth with sharp, pointy, chompy teeth things. 2nd cousin to the giant squid, I am sure! It would make any other tentacle fight sequence obsolete. Technology has far surpassed the Bob Mattey designed Giant Squid of 1954. I mean, they fight this beasty thing in daylight hours! The reason the 1954 20K film cut the sunset squid battle was that it didn't look right and one could see the tentacle operating wires....CGI sure took care of that!

And, the climatic stretch of 20K (in the first film) started with the Giant Squid battle - to re-do that battle now in a 20K redux is rather anti-climatic to the Kraken battle in POTC 2. (The Kraken battke in POTC 2 is the "11th hour solo" that starts the climatic stretch of POTC 2 as well.....

So - there ya go...reasons that 20K affecianados will really swarm to this film...as for anyone else...go and have some marvelous fun. It sets the story for the third installment in truly great ways.

Greenskyp and others...hey - thre was a female pirate in the first film! I'd give that casting office a call and see whether or not a properly attired female pirate extra wouldn't be welcome. There were women pirates....Grainia O'Malley (Elizabethian), Anne Bonney & Mary Reilly, and many others that went to the sea in piratical trade....

Word of warning. We just saw POTC:DMC, and it is guaranteed to give the smallest viewers nightmares! I loved the movie, and although my wife generally liked it, she was off-put by the amount of gory, dark stuff in the film. The first part with Jack's intro in the film is proceeded by some truely disturbing things!

Y'know, I usually do stay through the credits, but I felt like getting out of the theatre this time, and considering the ending, I was assuming there'd be nothing after the credits. Guess I'll have to go again...

one more 20KLUTS to POTC 2 similarity....the bow wake that the Kraken makes as it plows towards the Black Pearl is highly reminiscent of the NAUTILUS at collision speed.......
