New stage version of "Mary Poppins" may not be practically perfect in every way, but it's still a memorable night at the theater

It sounds like a really fun show.  It seems that a lot of characters dance with Mary...I just thought that was funny.

"The main problem with the stage version of "Mary Poppins" is that the book that Julian Fellowes wrote for the show too closely follows the style & feel of the original P.L. Travers stories."

I've wondered for the longest time, and couldn't find any information: What is a Broadway book?  I used to think that maybe it was a program book, but that quote above makes it sound like a novel...would anyone care to explain, please?!?

I know Jim  can't answer on here, but, for anyone else who was there at the opening (or has seen it since), was it a packed house?  Were there any glitches?

Thanks for the article, and pics, Jim!

"The Book" for a Stage Musical is the Script.

Verry Often somebody will wright the Book, or main plot and dialog, while some one else wrights the music.

Hope that answers your Question.

Just for the record, the correct spelling is "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."
For the interested, the Broadway cast performs a slightly-shortened version of this amazing dance number here on MSNBC (thanks to marypoppins.com, which also has a couple preview videos for the show, for the link): http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?g=f4c9d5f8-2dd7-4eda-840f-645b0e76e0d6&f=00&fg=copy

If the Broadway show is half as good as the original London cast's performance, it's a show that you will not want to miss. And, yes, "Feed the Birds" figures into the plot, with a new lesson for Jane...

The "book" is the screenplay/script for the show.

I saw the show in London last month.  Hopefully the American audience will appreciate the stage version of Mary Poppins.  I've seen the movie too many times to know and I LOVED the stage show.

Run, don't walk, NOW to NY.  It'll be worth the effort.

I had the great fortune of being in the audience on Wednesday Nov 16 -- the night before the official Broadway opening.  The audience was positively electrified and completely taken with the show right from the start.

It's a totally Broadway take shaped from the best of Walt Disney's classic 1964 film and the best of elements from PL Travers original stories.  The result is 2.5 hours of masterful theatrical sensation.  The performances are all top notch -- especially Ashley Brown as the enigmatic but lovable exceptional nanny and Gavin Lee as the authentically British chimney sweep Bert.  Both sing and dance like angels.

I was touched by the emotional tug of the story -- and yet the show is pulse-quickening fun!

Having read the positive reviews from the tough London critics and the raves for this new Broadway version -- only the coldest of hearts will leave this show without a spring in their step and a smile on their faces!!
