It's that time of year again. When -- on special nights -- WDW's Magic Kingdom undergoes this extraordinary transformation and becomes the place where "Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party" is held.

It really is a special kind of night. A night where creatures that you never thought you'd see in a Disney theme park -- like the Headless Horseman from "The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad" -- wander free.

Where -- as part of the twice-nightly "Boo to You Halloween Parade" ...

... some of the 999 ghosts that you see in "The Haunted Mansion" magically appear on Main Street U.S.A. Here you see some of the dancers from that attraction's ballroom sequence ...

... followed by the Hitchhiking Ghosts from the end of the ride.

Okay. Let's be real here for a moment. You & I both know that these aren't the "real" ghosts that you see in that Liberty Square attraction. They're just cast members who are dressed to (sort of) look like the AA figures that appear in that theme park ride.

Me personally, I wasn't all that impressed with the Hitchhiking Ghosts that were featured in this year's "Boo to You Halloween Parade." I don't think that (in spite of the impressive wigs, make-up and costumes that these cast members are wearing) they actually captured the characters' likenesses.

But -- then again -- it's hard to complain about a parade unit that features something as fun as the Haunted Mansion's precision grave digger drill team ...

... who regularly received applause from the guests who were standing along the parade route for their elaborately choreographed routines.

But you want to know what's truly cool about Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party? The WDW guests who attend this event are also allowed to come in costume. And -- as you can see by the photos below -- some people who come to this party really go all out.

Now this is how the Hitchhiking Ghosts are really supposed to look. Not to mention their not-so-lovely companion ...

... The Bride from the Haunted Mansion's attic sequence.

Now how impressive were these fan-made costumes? So impressive that cast members who worked at the really-for-real Haunted Mansion that night insisted on having their pictures taken with these guests in their costumes.

Appropriately enough, these pictures were taken right at the stroke of midnight. Just as the Haunted Mansion was shutting for the night, as yet another edition of "Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party" drew to a close.

You know, people sometimes ask me why I spend so much time at the Disney theme parks. It's the times like this -- where cast members & guests come to make a truly memorable moment -- that always make me " ... hurry back, hurry back ..."

Anyway ... I just thought that I'd share these truly unique photographs with you. And speaking of things that I've got to share ...

In addition to being JHM's official photographer & archivist, Jeff Lange also produces a best-selling series of Disney theme park DVDs. Lange's most recent title is his 3-disc "Trick or Treat" set that commemorates the Magic Kingdom's "Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party." Not all of us know that- thanks for ruining the Disney magic... :-p

I went to Mickey's Not-So-Scary 2 or 3 weeks ago.  I had been before, but it was even more fun this year.  I was kind of scared by some of the characters in the parade (sometimes they get really close...), but the parade is one of the best.  Besides seeing the scary characters, it's great to see more obscure characters come out, such as Clara Cluck, Clarabelle Cow, and I think Horace Horsecollar was there, too.  If anybody can make it to WDW this season, and still get tickets, I would highly recommend this.  And- free candy.  A lot of it.  Enough said.
  • I went on my birthday and it was a lot of fun - I actually have posted an edited ~10 minute quicktime video of the parade on my site - click on Disney Blog and scroll down. It was the best Disney parade my wife and I ever saw... http://www.josephdickerson.com.

  • OK   greenyskp  i looked at your trip pics and was wondering where the first and last pic were taken. I see coasters in the background. Just wondering if you could give the locatin of those photos. Thanks in advance. BTW you look like you had a great time at MNSSHP.
  • Thanks for the photos!  They're fabulous.
  • Lange - 12 pics    Greenyskp- 4837 pics   I'll let you do the math

Everyone should look at greenyskp's photos - few things in life are quite as satisfying as looking through someone else's Disney pics. Her costume is - as advertised - amazing from scratch - just like some sauces in the Boma buffet at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Clearly, she's ready to go on that Heidi Klum/one designer must be thrown off the island every week show. As long as she doesn't use the 'makeup by Kenmore power painter' technique every week.

But at some point we need a little common decency. What would Walt have done? Would he have included a picture of greenyskp wearing some face makeup and Nothing Else? Oh, I think not. Shocking. Hopefully John Lassetter will take a moment to edit your photo bucket.  :)   And for what it's worth - nice job on the Jasmine costume you made for your friend.
  • greenyskp- I saw that Zurg and Bo Peep!  I had just walked into Magic Kingdom, and they were on the left, and I thought that Zurg was actually a character to meet...I was shocked to find out that it was just someone dressed up.  And, your costumes were great!
  • And the award for "Largest Armpit Stain Ever" goes to............the fat ghost with the hat!!!
  • epcotrob: That was actually Busch Gardens. We did MNSSHP Friday, Epcot Saturday and then I met my parents at Busch Gardens on Sunday. I live 45 min. from Disney. and 10 from Busch.
