  • Since it came in too late at the end of the earlier thread, Jim, I'll repeat what I said:
That was a cheap, insulting STUNT.

Did I say "stunt"?  Sorry--I meant "tantrum".
And it'll take a *lot* more than a box of $3.95 kiddie books to turn -me- over into sending this site down the toilet just because you've got a few too many power trips and personal issues with the company.

Next bit of actual history/content.  Please.  If you remember how.
  • Sorry, for those puzzled by that little outburst, let's put it in a little more detailed context--
Maybe I just get upset at Jim asking us to do his dirty work for him:

    It works like this:
Go back and read the previous article--About how Disney execs are "keeping mum" about giving specific box-office projections before the movie opens (having learned not to shoot off their big mouths and shoot their own movie in the foot, as they did with "Cars").
But we need a figure to play with for next week's article...So who's going to provide those imaginary numbers-in-the-air, if Disney won't?   Take.  A.  Look.  Gee, you must've wanted those books pretty badly.

But "oh", you say, "What's the harm in having a little fun?--We're all going to see the movie after all, and I love Johnny Depp, etc.!"
What's the harm?  How about writing Jim's next-Monday article for him, in exactly the same way that we complain *he* does?:

Let's take an average figure of all the guesses.  (And yes, "guesses", not "estimates".  There's a difference, as your dictionary will concur.)--Let's say that they all average out to $100M for the weekend...Who cares, it's not our money, but for the sake of demonstration, let's call that the AMIFG--The Average Median Imaginary Fairyland Gross.
Now, let's say, that for whatever reason--bad weather, fewer screenings, skeptics waiting for reviews--not -everybody- rushes out on Weekend One, and it performs impressively, better than Superman (which isn't hard to do, at this point in the buzz), but falls short of the AMIFG, about $95M:
"Pirates underperforms expectations!  Disney's summer of surprise flops continue!  Will a change in the boardroom be in the works for Disney's new management?"
("But those weren't -studio- expectations!"..."Shh, quiet, it's a good headline!")

Too pessimistic--Let's try the other scenario:
Every fanboy and Depp-girl drops everything they're doing, takes a sick-day from work, and pumps up the box-office past the AMIFG, to about $120M.
"Disney's latest blockbuster blows the competition out of the water!  Has [...yyyep, you guessed it!] Cars finally met its crushing match?"

...You're being hoodwinked, people.  Bamboozled.  And by somebody who probably doesn't even know he's doing it.  At least, we HOPE not.
Thought I was kidding when I called it Jim's "tantrum", against those who accused him of getting too wrapped up in his own fantasy worlds about Disney's studio fortunes?...And wanting to put a nice, shiny bow on our getting to see things the way he does?
Aw, c'mon, it's fun!--And you get free stuff, too!
  • 102.2 million
  • If POTC does well and Jim fails to post a article up on Monday about it,then that'll prove he's got a problem with the Mouse. And no Jim I don't want to hear about how freak storms ruin your internet connection!

    Someone needs a dayjob.

...And yes, I mean you.  No, Not Jim.  You.  Its sad really.

  • I come to Jimhillmedia.com because I like Jim Hill's writing and the topics he writes about. While I don't have to agree with everything he says I still appreciate his perspective. I guess I just dont' understand while people read the stuff on this site if they hate Jim (and/or his writing)
  • I like Jim Hill's writing when he writes about the history of Disneyland, or backstage stories on the latest film, or that rare vault project no one had ever heard about until now...
As for his attempt to "prove" Lasseter Is Evil, like most readers, I can tolerate them with a chuckle, just for Jimmy being Jimmy.

...The line is drawn when he tries to make US do it too, and just because we're such drooling fanboys, we'll presumably do anything.
Jim, fight your *own* weird battles.  Or at least don't bribe us to do it.

(And for those who say, "Oh, but I LIKE to predict weekends, for such a cool film", you will probably be pleased to know that there is a well-established site to have fun predicting *any* film:  http://www.hsx.com
Try going there instead--Round here, we mostly -talk- about things.)
  • "Try going there instead--Round here, we mostly -talk- about things."  POSTED BY DEREKJ
  • oops, didnt mean to submit that.  but take that quote and put it into this context...

really we talk about "things" round here?  I had no idea.

Wow, i dont think you are helping your case Derek.  I like this contest, and i think its interesting to see what ppl think.  I would say this counts as talking about things.

I dont think Jim is trying to control us, i dont see any underlying plot to rule the world.  or even the disneyfanboy world.

  • I will say...$103.5 Million dollars.
  • Seems to me that having comments on this site demonstrates the futility of comments on this site.  Jim Hill entertains and, more often than not, illuminates some dark corner of Disney history or potential future.  That'd be why I have been following him for years, not because of the delightfully vapid comments posted after his articles.  What, exactly, is wrong with running a little contest on this site?  Does anyone here actually think Hollywood or Wall Street is going to see our fanboy predictions and base their next financial moves on them?  If you do, please consider a bowl of bran cereal or a piece of fruit for breakfast instead of crack.
  • DerekJ, you lack a worthy cause. This "principle-of-the-thing" stance you're taking is all well and good, but you're overdoing the venom and emotion. It's movie news. It just isn't that big of a deal, and your flaming soapbox makes you look a little ridiculous.
  • Just realized I forgot to add millions to my post. (why cant we edit our posts!)
    So to clarify.

Pirates will make 117.6 Million in its weekend opening.

    Like woah.
  • $68.1 million
  • Put me down for $72.3 mil
