Pottermore website looks to lure lapsed Harry Potter fans back into the fold

"Squee!" was my word for 2007. The ultimate fan girl sound, made all the more appropriate by the fact that I picked it up from Pottercast , one of the hour-plus long Harry Potter podcasts that I listened to immediately upon release every week. Not only was a I huge Harry Potter fan, I was a fan of the Harry Potter super-fans - those leaders among geeks who founded the two most popular Harry Potter fan websites out there, Melissa Anellli , webmistress and one of the early writers for The...

Why George R.R. Martin's massive "A Song of Ice and Fire" books are worth the effort, worth waiting for

I always feel a little bit ridiculous recommending George R.R. Martin 's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series to anyone. Why? They're fantastic books - but the size ... Copyright 1995 - 2011 Random House, Inc. All rights reserved I have an unfortunate weakness for long novels, and the first four in the series have approximately four thousand pages combined. With book five, " A Dance with Dragons " (which was released last Tuesday), the total comes to 5200 pages. So I do understand...

Just in time for the beginning of 2012 summer break, Orlando's Wet 'n' Wild water park has replaced its former kids area with Blastaway Beach , a sandcastle-themed family water play area. Blastaway Beach opened on Saturday June 2, with a stampede of excited children trying out the new slides (17 of them!) and playing in the two pools included in the revamped area. Photo by Max Schilling Blastaway Beach is centered around a 60-foot tall sandcastle. Every minute or so, a trough within the...

I'm a geek - I admit it. Much like a good friend of mine worships Johnny Depp, I have a girl-crush on Felicia Day . I've been playing video games before they were cool, and I still chain-read novels with cover-art featuring pastel horses, medieval defense weapons, and futuristic space vehicles. Even with all this geek-cred, I admit I was a little underprepared by my experience this Labor Day weekend at Dragon*Con , the annual sci-fi and fantasy convention held in Atlanta. Earlier this month, the Universal Orlando Resort invited JHM to take part in their Media "Boo" Camp. Meaning that one lucky representative from this website got to be a Universal scare-actor at this year's Halloween Horror Nights for one evening. The last time I went to HHN for JHM, things did not end all that well for me (I had weeks of nightmares afterwards. Not days. Weeks). But my husband, Max, really wanted to do this assignment for the site. So I agreed to go along and take pictures...

Happy Mardi Gras Day! Although the festivities in New Orleans officially end tonight at midnight (as Fat Tuesday gives way to Ash Wednesday), the party's just getting started at Universal Orlando . So if you find yourself in desperate need of "Beads, Bands and Good Times" now through April 23 rd , Universal Studios Florida is the place you need to be. For Mardi Gras lives on at that theme park . Thanks - in large part - to Universal Orlando's attention to detail. Making sure that...
