A Fowl Feature for Friday Finally Appears

You know, a lot of you JHM readers probably think I’m a turkey for not completely updating this website yesterday. Well, I’m not really a turkey …

The trio of turkeys — a Tom & two hens — that dropped in for a visit yesterday afternoon.

… This is really a turkey. Or — to be exact — three turkeys. A Tom & two hens. About a month ago, these guys began wandering into our yard on a fairly regular basis. Pecking up whatever loose bird seed had fallen out of our feeders as well as ridding our lawn of all grasshoppers, crickets and grubs.

Check out the snood on this guy (The snood — for those of you who don’t know — is
the fleshy appendage that dangles off the male turkey’s beak).

Typically, these turkeys will stroll into our yard at least once or twice each day. Where the male will put on these elaborate displays where he puffs himself up and struts across the lawn. Whereas the ladies … They’re not here to put on a show. They’re here to eat and — occassionally — take a dust bath.

As you might imagine, Nancy & I have really grown to be quite fond of our feathered friends. (Though — to be honest — I could do without these overgrown Butterballs turning up outside of my bedroom window at 5:30 in the morning, gobbling loudly.) So — in the weeks ahead — we’ll try & keep you posted on what these turkeys are up to. (Which — you’ll have to admit — will probably be a nice change from just reading about what the turkeys who currently run the Walt Disney Company have been up to.)

You’ve already seen the backside of water. Well, now take a peek at a turkey’s tail.

That’s the end (literally) for this week. We’ll talk again on Monday, okay?
