Cleaning out the old JHM Mailbag

Hey, gang!

Jim Hill here. I’m just now dummying out the schedule for the rest of this week. Believe it or not, we’ve got three more “Shrek” related stories on the way. Plus a great new article from Jackson “Pop Culture” King about the very first Jerry Seinfeld / Superman American Express commercial. Plus a new “Why For” from me. Plus (hopefully) new articles from Roger Colton, Chuck Oberleitner and Matt Springer.

But — as JHM’s final article for today –I thought I’d share some of the more interesting pieces of e-mail that have popped up in my in-box over the past few weeks. Stories that (I hope) will interest some of you die-hard Disneyana fans.

First up is an announcement from S/R Laboratories:

Celebrate Disney Animation!

Each May and October S/R Laboratories Animation Art Conservation Center presents their Lab Listings© animation art auction featuring the art from some of the most memorable moments in Disney animation history.

This season the sale takes place on May 24-25, 2004 and you can enjoy the magic of real Disney animation art for free! Just visit the S/R Labs web site at www.srlabs.com to view all 286 lots in the sale.

You may purchase their fully illustrated catalog and interactive CD at a special JimHillMedia.com price. Just give them a call and mention you’re a JimHillMedia.com reader. In addition, S/R will send you their animation art punch guide as well!

S/R Labs is celebrating 27 animagic© years and was honored to have partnered with the Walt Disney Family Foundation to create “Walt Disney: the Man and His Magic”.

Next up is an intriguing request from a student at Royal Welsh College of Music & Art in the U.K.:

Make your opinions about the theme park industry known!

Dear Mr. Hill

First of all, a warn congratulation on continually producing such a wonderful and informative site. It is a source of constant support and reference.

Let me introduce myself. I am Luke Burgess, a Theatre Design student at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, in Cardiff, UK. I am currently researching a dissertation on theme parks (hence why your site is such a useful one personally!). In order for me to get some idea of why people go to theme parks, I have set up a small website with downloadable questionnaires. These are then filled out and returned to me by the corresponding email address. I write to you as a plea for assistance. I was hoping you could make a small mention of the site on jimhillmedia.com. I would love to get some replies from the US, as most of the questions are Disney park-based, or on ones in the UK. So far, there are only two questionnaires (one on theme parks in general and another on roller coasters), but there will hopefully be another one purely on Disney theme parks and their attractions by the end of this week, and a further two in the near future. Also, every time I receive a hundred replies with email addresses, those email addresses will go into a draw for a small prize as a thank you for contributing answers. I’m not quite sure how this will work yet, especially for American winners, but I’m sure we can work something out!

As a student hoping to become a theme park designer in the future, I hope you can understand how this type of market research not only helps me to prove undisputed points in my dissertation, but also puts me ahead of the game when applying for employment.

Anyway, the website is www.fantastic-islands.co.uk. I hope this will not be too much trouble for you. Thank you for your time and help, and well done once again for your site.

And — finally — not that we want you folks to wander away from JHM’s own discussion boards … But my old buddy from MousePlanet, Brian Bennett, asked me to share this message with JimHillMedia.com’s readers:

Join the discussion over at MouseMemories.com!

Okay. That’s it for all the announcements I have in this week’s JHM mailbag. Talk to you folks tomorrow, okay?
