It’s a fantasy that every animation fan has. First breaking into Disney’s infamous vault and then screening all of those shorts that — for one reason or another — the Mouse has kept hidden away from view.
Well, if tunneling under the walls of Walt Disney Studios sounds like too much work to you … There is another option.
Tonight at the 2008 Newport Beach Film Festival, Roy E. Disney & Don Hahn will be hosting an evening of rarely seen animation. We’re talking about experimental pieces like 1987’s “Oilspot & Lipstick” (Which was Disney’s first foray into computer animation) as well as artistic shorts like “Destino,” “Lorenzo” and “The Little Match Girl” (Which — if all had gone according to plan — would have actually been components of a feature length follow-up to “Fantasia 2000“). Not to mention animated oddities like Disney’s 1998 Oscar nominee, “Redux Riding Hood.”

This unique entertainment (which represents the first-ever collaboration between the Festival and Walt Disney Studios) will be held at Newport Beach’s Lido Theater. With Roy & Don first giving a little backstory about each individual production before that short then gets screened.
This evening of rarely seen Disney animation will also feature Walt Disney Animation Studios’ most recent short, “How to Hook-Up Your Home Theater” as well as a classic Mickey Mouse cartoon (Which will be screened in honor of Mickey’s upcoming 80th birthday).
This year’s Newport Beach Film Festival has been something of a treasure trove for Disneyana fans. What with last Friday’s “A Spoonful of Sugar and Song with Richard Sherman” event as well as Saturday & Sunday’s screenings of Leslie Iwerks’ “The Pixar Story.” But tonight’s screening of these rarely seen shorts? It’s really something special.
