Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Disney’s “Newsies” kicks off its North American tour in October of 2014

Disney Theatrical
Productions
has certainly had a busy couple of weeks. First they announce plans
to transform the beloved-fairy-tale-turned-cult-classic "The Princess Bride"
into a stage production
. Next came word that Disney will be joining forces with
Sonia Friedman Productions to produce a
stage version of "Shakespeare in Love"
(which will begin previews at London's
Noel Coward Theatre
next July). Then the new musical comedy version of Disney's
"Aladdin"
began previewing at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto. Then Disney's "The
Lion King"
became the fourth longest running show In Broadway history. And now comes
the announcement that Disney's Tony Award-winning musical "Newsies" will be launching
a North American tour in October of 2014.

The North American tour of this Disney
Theatrical Production gets underway with some shakedown performances in Schenectady,
NY & Waterbury, CT before this show's official opening in Philadelphia. "Newsies"
will then spend one week at that city's Academy of Music as part of the
Broadway Philadelphia 2014-15 season. Other stops along this 24-city tour
include Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Charlotte, Baltimore and Dallas.

"Newsies" is inspired by the real-life
newsboy strike of 1899 when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway
newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful
newspaper publishers.

This stage musical is based on the Walt Disney Pictures' 1992 release
and this film's subsequent VHS & DVD releases.  Set in New York City at the turn-of-the-century,
"Newsies" is the tale of Jack Kelly, the charismatic newsboy and leader of a
group of teenaged newsboys who dreams of a better life far away from the harshness
of the streets.

On Broadway, the show received 23 major
theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award nods – and won Tony,
Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Score and Best
Choreography.

Disney's "Newsies" was initially workshopped
in NYC in 2010, had a pilot production at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New
Jersey during the Fall of 2011 before this show then transferred to The
Nederlander Theatre in March 2012.  Just
last week, the Broadway production of "Newsies" presented its 700th
performance.
