It’s that time of year again at Disney-MGM Studio theme park.

When literally millions of Christmas lights are attached to the buildings found in the New York Street area. Then — at dusk each night — someone backstage throws a switch …

… and this part of Disney-MGM suddenly becomes a holiday version of the Las Vegas Strip. Loaded with Christmas light displays that wink, blink, whirl and twirl.

This past Monday night was the official debut of the 2005 version of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights. And — as you can see by these photos — even though it was early November, thousands of people still made the trip to the studio theme park that night. Just so they could say that they were among the first to see this year’s display.

Based on what cast members were telling me this past Monday night, Disney’s technicians really out-did themselves with this year’s display. Working extra-hard to make sure that this was the most colorful version of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights ever presented at Disney-MGM.

But — that said — a lot of the set pieces from years past are still in place. Like this perennial guest favorite, the “Peace on Earth” revolving globe …

And given that this was a holiday-themed event being held inside of a Disney theme park, I’m guessing that you won’t be all that too surprised to hear that there was merchandise available for sale. Like these cool glow-in-the-dark drink mugs pictured above.

Mind you, what may surprise you is to learn that the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights actually features a full-size creche. As if to remind WDW visitors that there really was more to this season than just thousands upon thousands of winkin’, blinkin’ lights.
No matter what your religious persuasion may be, you really owe it to yourself to check out the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights at least once. This annual holiday display at Disney-MGM Studio theme park has to be seen to be believed.
The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights will be presented nightly now through January 8th. For further information of this WDW holiday display, please follow this link.
Jeff Lange is the staff photographer / archivist here at JHM. He recently launched his own series of unofficial Disney theme park DVDs. Which include “Jeff Lange’s Holiday Treat.” Which offers full coverage of last year’s “Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party” at WDW’s Magic Kingdom. If you’d like to learn more about this or any other of the entertaining recordings that Mr. Lange has produced, we suggest that you follow this link.
