Ruminations

Looking for a change of pace this week. So it is back to the miracle of the digital and not so images. We’ve got 16 from the photo collection to share with you this time. Unless otherwise credited, the photos are from the collection of Roger Colton.

Here are the two gentlemen who took us on the “Walk in Walt’s Footsteps” tour last year. That’s D.J. on the left with the clipboard, and Edmundo on the right.

A place well remembered from my early visits was the Flower Market on Main Street. In this Panavue slide, we see it sometime in the early Seventies.

I’ve been enjoying the Disneyland Records compact disc of the Golden Horseshoe Review lately. Here’s another Panavue slide of the cast of the show at work on stage during the finale.

Touching on some of the “magic” from a Disneyland visit, Mary Poppins takes a moment to chat with these two guests.

One guess as to who the train enthusiast is. From what I know, this was a farewell to steam trip on a Southern California shortline railroad. I just can’t remember which one. It’s either the Santa Maria Valley Railway or Ventura County Railway.

Here’s a place I have spent way too many hours over the last twenty something years. It’s the HO scale model railroad of the Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society. And it looks like Amtrak’s “California Zephyr” is all set to depart the station.

Seems that train buffs also tend toward other things like fire trucks. So it should not be much of a surprise to see this collection of vintage fire equipment parked in front of the old firehouse at Thompson Flat on the Diablo Valley Lines.

And the real thing gets us out and about here in the Bay Area. Former Southern Pacific 2472 is off from San Francisco on a sunny summer afternoon in 2003.

Our recent trip to Reno by private railroad car was another great time. Bright sunshine was the highlight of the trip over the Sierra summit to the Silver State.

We always make it our business to know what our guests prefer and make sure to have it on hand. Bartender Ben Heine offers a libation for approval before getting down to business.

Finishing up the trip, we had very light snow falling as we came west. Safe and warm, it’s just about time for that second seating for lunch!

In a moment of relaxation, Jeff Ferris and Roger Colton enjoy a break in the observation lounge of the “Tamalpais”.

Only about an hour and a half late this trip, it’s “All Aboard” and away we go leaving Martinez on our way to Emeryville. From left to right, that’s Ben Heine, Dasha Clancey, Greg “Coop” Cooper and Garret Kirby enjoying the rear platform.

Gotta keep an eye on Ken. He’s known to have some eccentric moments such as this one where he’s been out in the noon-day sun a bit too long!

Here’s a look at some of the Hawaiian Railway Society’s future track expansion along the Leeward Coast of Oahu. If all goes well, Roger might get back there this year…

And finishing up, another view of that glorious sunset from the 36th floor of the Aston Waikiki Beach Tower. With the downpour going on outside here in Livermore, boy could we use some of this!

Hope you enjoyed this photo feature. Roger’s got a few goodies lurking for the next few weeks to try and change the subject a bit. Stay tuned…

And thanks again to everyone who shows their appreciation using Roger’s Paypal Donation Box. As Eeyore so appropriately says, “Thanks for noticing me.”
