FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Pittsburgh-- ToonSeum Celebrates Veterans In honor of the men and women who have served in our nation's armed services, the ToonSeum is offering free admission throughout the month of November to veterans and an exclusive opportunity to see their latest exhibit, The Art of Caroll Spinney. While the Spinney exhibit features many cartoons and paintings centered on his beloved Sesame Street characters Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, nearly a third of the gallery features original strips of Harvey, Spinney's military themed comic. Spinney wrote and illustrated Harvey for several years while serving in the Air Force in the mid-1950s where it was published in military newspapers. The gallery includes 12 original strips featuring a genial soldier who's adventures mainly revolve around the dinner table. Also featured are sketches that showcase Spinney's fascination with jet-planes and automobiles as well as cartoons he drew as a child. "Harvey is one of several strips that Caroll drew throughout his life," said Joe Wos, the executive director of the ToonSeum. "After his service in the Air Force he could have very easily pursued a career as a cartoonist had he not accepted the job with Jim Henson." "We are so grateful to our veterans and hope that they will take advantage of this small token of our appreciation,"Wos added. The Art of Caroll Spinney will run through January 30th.
